What is a Mantra?

The Sanskrit word Mantra is derived from two root sounds – mana (mind) and tra (to protect). Mantra is defined as ‘Mananāt Trāyate Iti Mantraha’ – that which uplifts when contemplated upon. In other words, Mantra is inseparably linked to contemplation, the process through which the Divine is experienced, the path to spiritual illumination and self-realization.

Mantra is a very powerful tool for the transformation of the mind and helps us access a higher power and understand our true nature. Practice of Mantra Meditation – known as Japa – helps raise the vibration of the aspirant from the ego-centric self towards the higher Self, strengthen the alignment with his/her true nature, lead towards life in the light of Pure Awareness and the experience of ‘Sahaja Avastha’ – Natural State.

The word Mantra can also be understood as “that which protects the mind”, connecting us to our innate wisdom and giving access to stillness of mind as well as imperturbable sense of peace.

Mantras are rooted in the Vedic literature and are an offering to the entire mankind by the ancient sages of India. Vedas contain knowledge of the Self, accessible to everyone to be discovered and meditated upon, for the well-being of humanity. Vedas teach Cosmic Oneness.

As Swami Satyasangananda Saraswati wrote in his book – Light on the Guru and Disciple Relationship – “The Mantra is a link between you and the Cosmos, between you and the deeper mysteries of the Universe. Its meaning is purely metaphysical and relates directly with the very core of your existence.”

“Mantras help you focus your mind, go inward and find inexhaustible fountainhead of peace and harmony within yourself. They encapsulate vibrant cosmic energies in sound form and help you realize your limitless potential by connecting to them. Mantra chanting can help you stop the negative chatter in the mind, deal with addictions and attract positive things into your life!

“We are part of infinite energy fields, which change their frequency depending on how we impact them with our thoughts and intentions. Anxious mind will create fields of destructive energy, while peaceful mind and gratitude will transform the environment into one full of harmony, happiness and joy. Mantra Japa helps us to purify, transform and energize our physical, emotional and mental states, reconnect with the creative aspects of the Self, and, as we know, when we change the energy field – the patterns of manifestation also change. Our voice is an incredible sonic tool with focused intention, and this vibration brings all our being to“unified resonance”, attuning us into harmony and healing, and Universal Energy Field mirrors back what we have sent as our signal, responding accordingly. Mantras are instruments of Light Warriors who stand for truth and integrity every day.”

Benefits of Mantra practice

Mantras are an essential part of one’s Sadhana. They are very useful in the purification of the Nadis (subtle energy channels) and transformation of Prana, other energies as well as subtle bodies.

Every syllable of a mantra has its specific effect and meaning. Mantra Shastra is the foundation of all spiritual practices and involves study of sound, how each sound is produced, the impact of each sound as well as how to elevate one’s consciousness through these sounds to establish a rhythm with the cosmic vibration.

Mantra Japa is especially important in the current times of great political and economical pressure, which result in restlessness of the mind, stress, anxiety and inner conflict. When there is decline in ethics, moral values and self-confidence, it is critical to work towards sustaining inner strength, peace, harmony and being rooted in integrity and wholeness.
